Non-Credentialed Veterinary Support Staff are assigned to different phone lines based on our company needs and the applicant's background/experience. Below you will find information on the different phone lines we're currently hiring for, as well as information about schedules, training, and pay ranges. Veterinary Information Specialist I, Job Description:
The Veterinary Information Specialist I (VIS) position is responsible for responding to incoming cases on Pet Poison Helpline via telephone and chat regarding potential toxic exposures, poisonings, and other adverse events from pet owners. Specialists take full histories and details of the events, triage the cases, and provide accurate medical, health, and safety information to the callers. Specialists document each case in an electronic record and follow up as necessary to ensure the well-being of the animals and facilitate adverse event reporting. Given the nature of the position, many pet owners are calling under stressful circumstances and are therefore in distress. VIS must be able to manage cases under pressure and be comfortable talking to people in various emotional states.
Schedule Options:
Full-time:
Works 40 hours per week. Shifts listed below. Employee will choose either 8.5-hour long shifts (5 days/week) OR 10.5-hour long shifts (4 days/week). Employees will be scheduled set days, typically following every other week rotation. This includes working every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday), as well as rotation of holidays. Work weeks run Saturday through Friday. Shift start and end times are scheduled in advance and will vary from day to day.
- Evening Shift: (eligible for a $2/hour shift differential)
- Shifts will be scheduled between the hours of 2pm-2:30am CST.
Part-time:
- Evening Shift Option #1:
- Works 20 hours per week, 5 days per week, 4 hours long shifts
- Shifts are scheduled between 4pm and 10pm CST
- Will work every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday) and have two days off the following week.
- Employees will be scheduled set days, typically following every other week rotation.
- Shift start and end times are scheduled in advance and will vary from day to day. See training requirements below.
- Works rotating holidays

- Evening Shift Option #2:
- Works 20 hours per week, 4 days per week, 5 hours long shifts
- Shifts are scheduled between 4pm and 11pm CST
- Will work every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday) and have two days off the following week.
- Employees will be scheduled set days, typically following every other week rotation.
- Shift start and end times are scheduled in advance and will vary from day to day.
- Works rotating holidays

- Weekend Only Shift: Weekend staff can choose to either work 8.5- or 10.5-hour long shifts. Shifts are scheduled between the hours of 8am-8:30pm CST. Weekend staff will work any holidays that fall on their regularly scheduled weekends. See training requirements below. Can choose from the following options:
- Work every weekend, both Saturday and Sunday
- Work every Saturday
- Work every other weekend, both Saturday & Sunday
Veterinary Industry Representative I, Job Description:
The Veterinary Industry Representative I (VIR) position is responsible for responding to incoming cases through SafetyCall International via telephone regarding potential adverse events and other questions or concerns from pet owners and veterinary professionals. The VIR will take full histories and details of the events, triage the cases, and provide accurate medical, health, and safety information to the callers. VIR's document each case in an electronic record and follow up as necessary to ensure the well-being of the animals and facilitate adverse event reporting. Given the nature of the position, many pet owners are calling under stressful circumstances and are therefore in distress. VIRs must be able to manage cases under pressure and be comfortable talking to people in various emotional states.
Schedule Options:
Full-time: Works 40 hours per week. Shifts listed below. Employee will work 4days/week, with each shift being 10.5-hours. Employees will be scheduled set days, typically following every other week rotation. This includes working every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday), as well as rotation of holidays. - Mid Shift:
- Shifts will be scheduled between the hours of 10am-10:30pm CST.
- Evening Shift: (eligible for a $2/hour shift differential)
- Shifts will be scheduled between the hours of 2pm-2:30am CST.

Veterinary Helpline Representative I, Job Description: The Veterinary Helpline Representative (VHR) is responsible for responding to incoming cases via the telephone, email, and chat applications for our veterinary nurse lines regarding general animal health and wellbeing questions on topics such as behavior, nutrition, and disease processes, as well as triaging symptoms, potential toxic exposures, poisonings, and other emergency situations. Position is responsible for managing and documenting cases, taking full histories and details of the events, triaging cases, and providing accurate medical, health, and safety information to the callers. Each case will be documented in SafetyCall International (SCI) databases. VHR staff will perform follow-up as necessary to ensure the wellbeing of the animals. Given the nature of the position, many pet owners are calling under stressful circumstances and are therefore in distress. VHR must be able to manage cases under pressure and be comfortable talking to people in various emotional states.
Schedule Options:
Part Time: Works 24 hours per week. Shifts listed below. Employee will work 3days/week, with each shift being 8-hours. Employees will be scheduled set days following whichever option they choose below. Work weeks run Saturday through Friday. Shift start and end times are scheduled in advance and will vary from day to day.
- Every weekend option:
- Week 1- Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday
- Week 2- Saturday, Sunday, Monday
- Day Shift: Scheduled sometime between 9:00am-6:30pm
- Every Saturday option:
- Week 1- Saturday, Tuesday, Friday
- Week 2- Saturday, Monday, Tuesday
- Float Shift: Scheduled sometime between 6am-2:30am (eligible for a $3/hour shift differential)
- Every other weekend option:
- Week 1- Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday
- Week 2- Saturday, Sunday, Friday
- Float Shift: Scheduled sometime between 6am-2:30am (eligible for a $3/hour shift differential)
Training Requirements for all positions/shifts:
Full-time and Part-time candidates must be able to commit to a 4-week (6-week for the Overnight Veterinary Information Specialist I position), full time, paid, remote training process up front. Training schedules are determined in advance and may include daytime/evening hours as well as weekends. Currently, we are unable to work with any scheduling conflicts during the training process. After training is complete the shift you are hired for will begin.
Required Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- The Veterinary Information Specialist role requires at least 4 years experience performing veterinary technician duties in a veterinary facility. All other roles require at least 3 years experience.
- Ability to work varying shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Above average proficiency with keyboarding, PCs, Microsoft Office, and common computer software and hardware.
- Ability to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, ratios and percentages.
- Verbal and written communication that is clear, concise, accurate, professional, empathetic, and compassionate on a regular basis, including during stressful or high-pressure situations and interactions.
- Strong attention to detail and spelling with the ability to accurately enter data with very few errors.
- Ability to attend to multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining quality and accuracy.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to gather and analyze complex or diverse information.
- Customer service focused attitude and behavior.
- Maintain confidentiality of clients’ products, procedures, and case detail as well as SCI’s operating procedures.
- Remote employees must be able to meet and maintain IT requirements following SCI policies.
Remote Agent Requirement:

In addition, employees must also have a space that allows them to work without interruptions or distractions, and must not have any other responsibilities during the time they are working such as caring for animals or dependents.
Pay & Benefits:
- The starting pay range is a base rate between $18-$19/hour (plus shift differentials if applicable and noted above).
- Employees who work weekend phone shifts between the hours of 12am CST on Saturday through 4am CST on Monday will receive an additional $5/hour differential on top of their base rate and any other differentials that they have.
- Pay varies based on the individual where we look at several factors including education, experience, and credentials. Pay will be discussed on an individual basis in the interview process.
